Putting Lipstick on a Pig
Let’s talk about one of the biggest frustrations when designing a space: cost. Even in the luxury sector, where I typically work, sticker shock is real. I’m a firm believer in the mantra, “buy once, cry once”—invest in quality pieces now, and they’ll last forever. But let’s be honest: sometimes that’s just not realistic.
Many of us fall into the category of HENRYs (high earners, not rich yet), where the money’s coming in but seems to vanish just as quickly. Whether you’re designing for a client or decorating your own space, it’s all about striking a balance: knowing when to splurge and when to save.
Take dressers, for example. I would love to splurge on a one-of-a-kind beauty from 1stDibs, but alas—rent isn’t going to pay itself (sigh). So, when it comes to practical but less-than-dreamy pieces, I say go the frugal route and put some "lipstick on a pig." (Not that these items are pigs...but you get the idea!)
Case in point: when designing Paige DeSorbo’s first “big girl apartment,” we took a thoughtful approach to balancing where to save and where to splurge—much like the way Paige curates her own effortlessly chic style. This project was such a joy to work on! While we didn’t get a chance to showcase it on Homeworthy (though you know I love to share my work wherever possible, LOL), Paige did an amazing home tour for Open House TV that beautifully captured the space.
In her apartment, I upgraded an Ikea dresser with gorgeous hardware from Modern Matter; you can find the exact backplate hardware here and a similar knob here because I know you’re going to ask!
Was it the smartest move financially? Maybe not, since the hardware ended up costing more than the dresser itself (LOL), but here’s the thing—good hardware is like jewelry for your furniture. It’s timeless, and you can reuse it forever. The result? A chic, elevated piece that’s actually enjoyable to look at.
If you’re on a budget, there are plenty of affordable options for hardware on Amazon that still pack a punch.
Another Trick I’m Loving: Wallpaper
For a current project, I’m transforming two Wayfair dressers using Society Social peel-and-stick grasscloth wallpaper. I’m doing the drawer fronts in a classic wheat-colored grasscloth and the sides in a rich chocolate brown.
For hardware, I’m debating between a splurge—stunning acrylic pulls from LuxHoldUps—or a more budget-friendly lucite option from Amazon.
If this were a masculine space, I’d lean into a Ralph Lauren vibe with leather pulls instead. (Side note: if you’re designing a man’s den, check out Visual Comfort’s Ralph Lauren Collection sconces—so good and they are on sale now!).
Why It’s Worth the Effort
Yes, splurging on things like Modern Matter or LuxHoldUps can feel indulgent. And yes, wallpapering a dresser might sound like a tedious DIY project (pro tip: hire someone through TaskRabbit or Thumbtack to save your sanity—and your relationship). But trust me, these small investments make a world of difference (I mean- come on- the evidence is here). They elevate what’s basic into something bespoke and give you breathing room until you can afford that dream dresser down the road.
So, go ahead—put some lipstick on that pig. Your future self (and your space) will thank you.
